First Generation

2.  Willliam SWARBROOKE was born in Feb 1804 in Macclesfield, CHS. He was baptized on 8 Apr 1804 in Christchurch, Macclesfield, CHS.1,6 He appeared in the census as follows:1

7 Jun 1841 in HO107/ 131/ 17-16 Fountain Street, Macclesfield, 35, Silk Weaver, born cheshire.

30 Mar 1851 in Raise Street, Salcoats, Ayrshire - CSSCT1851_128, Head, Married, 40, Hand Loom Weaver, born England.

 7 Apr 1861 in RG9/ 1947/ 36/ 31 - Cornhill Cross, Leek, Lodger, Marr, 52, Silk Throwster, born Macclesfield.

 2 Apr 1871 in RG10/ 2883/ 32/ 13 - 117 Belle Vue, Leek, Head, Marr, 65, Silk Throwster, born Macclesfield.

Willliam was buried in 1878 in Public Grave - Leek Cemetery.7 8 He died on 4 Aug 1878 at the age of 74 in 127 Mill Street, Leek, STS.8

Parish Register - Glasgow Old Parish 1850 13th February : William Swarbrooke, silk throwster in Glasgow & Margaret Wylie residing there married 1st Feb by John Graham, Independent Minister in Glasgow.

The 1851 census for Scotland shows that William & Margaret had a son JAMES aged 4 years, but this is impossible as a baby named James died in 1842 aged 4 weeks, but was the son of William & his first wife Sarah Wilkes

Death Certificate obtained 22/12/1994 Surname has a definite "E" on the end, cause of death - Old Age (73) Margaret , widow of deceased, of 127 Mill Street, Leek  in attendance. Occupation listed as Silk Weaver.

William is known to have worked at Silk Mills in MACCLESFIELD, MAYTHORNE, PAISLEY (Scotland), GLOUCESTER, LEEK and DERBY - but not in that order. He left sons in 3 Counties - Derby (John), Nottingham (Frederick) and Staffs (James) which is where the name Swarbrook(E) occurs today.

On Samuel seniors death in November 1834 and because his wife Betty had died the previous year in June 1833 - the properties that the family owned mostly in Fountain Street were left to their six children.
Three of those children had already died (Sarah 1801, John 1817, & Nancy ?)  thus the inheritance went to William, Samuel & George. This is shown as their qualification to be in the Electoral Registers   It would appear from the electoral registers that William retained the property in Macclesfield and let it out to others, although he himself had left Macclesfield in 1848 - According to the census Thomas Dexter lived at 12 Fountain Street, Macclesfield
